AMBIGUITAS is a Satanic Black Metal band from Samara (Russia), now located in Moscow. The band is formed in 2003, by Frosgart (guitars, bass, keyboard, drum synth, back vocals) and Darhark (vocals, flute), and Habrock (bass) as session member, who also play in the suicidal Black Metal band MORK MINNESMERKE.
The lyrics are written by Horned (BLACK HORDE PRODUCTIONS), Frosgart and Sulwen, and the ideological themes of AMBIGUITAS are Satanism and Misanthropy. The word "Ambiguitas" is the Latin form of "Vagueness". Vagueness, Provocation and Contradiction are the main instruments of Chaos and of Followers of Anticreation/Left Hand Path. The main conception of "Time Of Goat" is the omen of Capricorn's Era, the Era when the humanity will be dead... You can read some lyrics of AMBIGUITAS in Black Alchemy web-zine in the subsection «Dark Poetry», you find Sulwen Poems, and the three Horned's lyrics in their original Russian form.
The band have recorded this debut full length "Time Of Goat" in 2003, composed of 9 (English) tracks, among them a tribute to Euronymous, and one bonus track in Russian. AMBIGUITAS play fast and hypnotic Black/Industrial Black Metal, with a very metallic though contained sound, constant battle beats and rawer eerie vocal tones.
The experimental intro,"Time Of Goat (Intro)", is shaped by fuzzy metallic notes that raise the dissonant melody and cavernous echoed vocals.
The outstanding and metallic guitar sound and constant battle beats give an industrial touch to the tracks, that are played on a fast and sustained tempo, as on "Green Rays", that refers to the Green Rays of Lucifer, darkened by thicker metallic riffs on the short melodic breaks. These fuzzy and dissonant riffs take at times completely over the instrumentation, that sounds like a wall of noise, as on "Wrathful Tempter", or "Ghost Of The Past", strengthened by the restless beats, and lower Black/Death vocal tones in the vein of INQUISITION. Some higher metallic melodic riffs raise over the suffocating metallic tones on the instrumental passages. Despite of this metallic yet noisy prominent guitar sound, the instrumentation sound more melodic than dissonant, as on "Just Hate", enhanced by an Euronymous quotation read by Sulwen, and "When The Blood Arise From The Ice", played with ultra fast beats, sustained noisy riffs thickened by backing driving outbursts or slower melodic riffs and the ultra low vocals.
The continuous battle beats adopt at times more variations and rhythm changes, as on the fast "Call Of Blood", a song about Darkness and the Gloomy Archetypes of North. Hypnotic and repetitive riffs stress the rigid melody, pierced by a furtive echoed break.
The last and varied "Equinox Autumn" (11 minutes) is the only Russian track of this album, a fast and depressive song about Doom and Despair. The forceful tempo is pierced at times by atmospheric breaks, shaped by vivid and melodic synth lines that sound like an organ. The bass work is more audible on the mid paced parts and the guitars adopt catchier variations in the sound.
Slower tracks blow more intense atmospheres into the release, as "From The Decrepit Eaves", a tribute to Euronymous, played with the same thick metallic sound but on a Doom driven tempo, a melodic track stressed by sparse muffled beats, a cold melody, and intermittent, ultra low vocals that add catchier tones to this heavier song lightened by an acoustic melody and floating ethereal backing noise on the outro. Or "Dark Path", a shorter depressive track played with noisy and mid paced riffs, more varied beats and low even half spoken vocal tones, as used in their side project MORK MINNESMERKE.
This album contains ultra fast and more depressive tracks of antichristian Black Metal, played with an outstanding and balanced sound, some melodic parts that remind at times of earlier Scandinavian releases, and an unusual even half spoken vocal style that shapes eerie even intense atmospheres. A good output, displayed in a glossy Black / white layout containing complete info and pictures, recommended.
AMBIGUITAS's logo was drawn by Sulwen, and BLACK HORDE PRODUCTIONS released this album, that is the first and perhaps last album of the band, in a edition of 100 handnumbered copies: (BHP-01): "Time Of Goat".

Wenn offensichtlich unfähige Musiker in ihren "anspruchsvolleren" Bands elendig scheitern, bieten sich ihnen zwei Optionen: Entweder sie lassen es ganz bleiben (definitiv die bessere Entscheidung), oder sie versuchen ihr Glück in primitiven Formationen, bei denen es kaum einen Unterschied macht, ob man richtig spielt, schlecht spielt, gar nicht spielt, den Wellensittich beim Pfeifen oder die Nachbarin beim Pinkeln aufnimmt... Für letzteres (nein, nicht das mit der Nachbarin) konnten sich zwei Musiker begeistern, die zusammen auch MORK MINNESMERKE bilden. Insgesamt besteht das Line-Up aus fünf Personen, wobei in der kuriosen Besatzungspolitik der Russen gleich zwei ausschließlich als "Lyrics Author" tätig sind! Na das müssen lyrische Leckerbissen sein, dummerweise nicht abgedruckt... Hingegen wird man nach einem Schlagzeuger vergebens suchen, denn ein Computer gibt, meist sehr schnell, die Takte. Ausnahme ist z.B. das sehr melancholische "Through The Decrepit Eaves", das nicht so recht zum Rest passt, aber von der Stimmung ganz in Ordnung ist. Zum Großteil ist AMBIGUITAS nämlich schneller, satanischer Black Metal, dessen Gitarrenpartie sich aus brausendem Bass, beständigem Surren und einem extrem schrillen Nebengeräusch einer völlig überdrehten Klampfe zusammensetzt. Das zehrende Kreischen des Instruments erinnert mich an DECAYEDs Beitrag zum "Black Metal Endsieg II". Insofern könnte die Band sogar ganz netten, völlig dissonanten Noise Black Metal spielen, wären da nicht melodische Breaks oder andere Spielereien wie dürftig vorgetragene Lead-Versuche oder sinnlose Akustikparts, oder der allgemeine Hang zur Albernheit. Man hätte teilsweise besser daran getan das Ganze z.B. im Stile älterer KRIEG einfach rotzig herunterzurasseln, teils zu improvisieren und die Mucke noch mehr rauschen und kratzen lassen. Wenn sich dann noch ein Schlagzeuger findet, das wäre gut. Am Gesang gibt es nichts zu meckern. Die hallende, etwas tiefere Stimme erinnert manchmal etwas an INQUISITION; natürlich um Längen schlechter, aber immerhin...
Fazit:
Noch mehr Krach bitte sehr!
Das Album erschien auf schwarzer CDr in einer Auflage von 100 nummerierten Exemplaren. Weshalb das letzte Stück ein "Bonustrack" sein soll, kann ich euch auch nicht sagen.

Doch hin und wieder kann man unter dem Krach auch so etwas wie hörbare Musik erkennen. "Dark Path" beispielsweise ist simpel, treibend, eingängig - und wäre sicher recht nett anzuhören, wenn diese CDr nicht mit einem kaputten Keyboard als Gitarrenersatz aufgenommen worden wäre. AMBIGUITAS scheinen durchaus in der Lage, düster stürmende Melodien zu kreieren. Warum sie daraus ein Geheimnis machen wollen, ist mir nicht ganz klar. Auch langsamere Abschnitte gelingen hin und wieder ganz gut. So ist "Wrathful Tempter" stellenweise wunderbar schleppend und erinnert mit seinem fast "modernen" Klang an neuere SATYRICON-Werke. Diesen durchaus vorhandenen Höhepunkten stehen - wie gesagt - deutliche Schwächen gegenüber, so irritiert die Rhythmusmaschine nicht nur in den schnellen Abschnitten und das eine oder andere Solo hätte man für meinen Geschmack ruhig in der Gitarre lassen können. Doch Potential meine ich hier und dort durchaus erkennen zu können. Und so ist mir das hier vorgeführte klangliche Versteckspiel völlig unverständlich. Schade drum.

Eine Band aus Russland. Kalt, rau und eisig. Genau so kann man sich den Sound dieser ersten Eigenproduktion der Russen vorstellen. Alle Musiker sind momentane oder ehemalige Mitglieder der Band MORK MINNESMERKE und werden vom Black Alchemy web-zine, bzw. dem Label BLACK HORDE veröffentlicht. Die Musik variiert von treibend, düsteren Songs des langsamen und mittleren Tempos bis hin zu echten Prügeltracks. Songs wie "Through The Decrepit Eaves" oder "Wrathful Tempter", so düster und depressiv wie man sie hier kaum erwartet hätte, zu Songs mit Titeln wie "Green Rays" oder "Just Hate" die aus Geprügel und mittempo-Melodien kaum herauskommen. Alles unterlegt von einem dezenten Keyboard und einem keifenden Gesang, was will man mehr..... Im Prinzip kann man sagen, dass auf dieser CD für jeden etwas dabei ist. Die Schwächen sind wohl das störende, etwas unechte Schlagzeug, das ab und an den Bezug zur Realität verliert. Ebenso das in fast jedem Lied vorkommende Gitarrensolo, das mit der Zeit immer mehr an Originalität verliert. Man kann auf jeden Fall nicht leugnen dass hier einige nennenswerte Kapazitäten enthalten sind und man schon jetzt auf das neue Werk gespannt sein kann.

Here we have an extremely limited Demo CD-R of a Russian outfit. Well, Russia... You know what it means?! That's right, most instruments are cheap, fake and sounding weird. And here it's apply as fuck! Not only the band uses an impossible speedy drumming with programs but the fucking guitars sounds like some "Star Trek"'s phasers or something like this, like any outerspace thing... I mean, for one or two tracks, it can be interesting, but for a full lenght demo, it's kind of a pain in the ass. Well, some positive news income from the fact the vocals are great and pretty fucken necro, but the whole thing is lame and pissing me off. I don't get the point in choosing such a irrelevent sound for the guitars, cause yeah! The riffs aren't bad at all, but it's boring to hear it played on a lightsabrer instead of a guitar. Don't get me wrong, I'm not sold out to Metal Zone disto, but I'm not kind on Fisherprice's keyboard simulators neither. Let's be honest, that's suck and this isn't heavy!!! This band had great potential, but they wasted it all with a kiddy pick on sound. That was a real weird idea from them... Another weird fact, they are like 242364762 peoples in this line-up but actually only 3 guys do the music... Yeah, that's it, 3 Russians to do the job a child could have done... Well, come on, guys, play real Black Metal, and stop that Sci-Fi nerds hobby! This is Black Metal, not a joke!

AMBIGUITAS - 2003 - "Time Of Goat"
Out of Russia comes this Black Metal horde, delivering 9 tracks of Black Metal ranging from slow to mid-paced to fast, plus an intro. The music here reminds me quite a lot of earlier BEHERIT and STINY PLAMENU, with some SKAUR and ULVER sounding acoustic parts and a good dose classic Heavy Metal here and there, with that special eastern European sound to it. This sounds quite refreshing.
The vocals sound like a mix of "Under A Funeral Moon" era Nocturno Culto and Satyr around the "Megiddo" MCD. They also remind me of the vocals by Lord Therramon of DOM DRACUL.
As mentioned earlier, a drummachine is utilized, but not in a too annoying way. The production is actually quite good, and all the instruments can be heard clearly. The guitar sound is a bit different, quite metallic, with a sharp and icy edge to it. The production reminds me mostly of that found on later STRIBORG releases. Standout tracks are "Through The Decrepit Eaves", "Do Arise The Blood From The Ice", "Just Hate" and the eleven minute final track "Equinox Autumn". This is a fullength released as a CD-R in limited quantities, so act fast.
